Standing up for KCK

Our community is at a crossroads. A changing grid and abrupt removal of federal grants leave us facing substantial challenges. Now is the time for thoughtful, curious and empathetic leadership to put the community first. Here are some of my priorities (click them below to expand)

  • As we speak, the UG is advancing datacenter proposals, such as the Red Wolf development. Without delays, these projects would more than double the BPU’s power demand in the next six years.

This provides a unique opportunity to generate municipal revenue without further squeezing residents, but there are lots of pitfalls and traps our community could fall into.

I promise to stand up for residents in the following ways:

    1. Financial protections:

    • No taxpayer subsidies from the BPU to these datacenters

    • Residential rates should NEVER pay for commercial usage.

    • Guarantees by developers to cover shortfalls if investment falls through

    2. Environmental protections:

    • Work with UG to build comprehensive Community Benefits Agreement

    • Vote against any Diesel generators in our neighborhoods.

    • 24/7 clean energy capacity requirement

  • There is a trust deficit between the BPU and the community AND between the BPU and UG. Fixing this will require dedicated servants communicating and listening, and asking good questions.

    • Make BPU appointments and quality service available to all residents- regardless of language!

    • Partner with local NGOs working to connect the BPU with residents

    • End No-Bid contracts

  • Our grid infrastructure is about to rapidly expand, and this offers an opportunity to grow it sustainably.

The 2024 BPU Integrated resource plan shows that the quickest transition to a clean grid is also the most affordable scenario. Investments in storage and transmission must be explored to make this viable.

Around the country, datacenters are usually accompanied by large diesel generators in nearby neighborhoods. Legal protections in a Community benefits agreement would help prevent this. I will work with the UG to make this a priority.
